On Saturday, on Instagram, Oprah Winfrey posted a tribute to her father, Vernon, who passed away on Friday after a battle with cancer.
The media tycoon stated, “Yesterday, with family by his bedside, I had the holy distinction of witnessing the man responsible for my life draw his final breath. At his passing, “we could feel a peace come into the room.”
Plans for the funeral were not immediately made public.

Vernon Winfrey was a 16-year member of Nashville’s Metro City Council and a well-known barber in his neighborhood.

Oprah throws a special Fourth of July party for her father.
Oprah Winfrey surprised her father with a party at his Nashville home a few days before he passed away. Vernon was astonished to learn that his daughter had thrown him a “Vernon Winfrey Appreciation Celebration” rather than the expected standard Fourth of July party.
She said on Instagram, “He FELT the love and savored in it until he could no longer speak.”

Guests included Gayle King and gospel singer Wintley Phipps, who sang “Precious Lord” for Vernon Winfrey while he sat in a barber chair to honor his more than 50-year career.
Likewise, the event was intended to give her dad “his flowers while he’s still well enough to smell them.”
In addition, Winfrey acknowledged her father’s influence on her work ethic during the celebration, adding that her father hardly ever stopped his firm on holidays. “I learned from your good work ethic, showing up, being on time—that is why for 25 years of The Oprah Show, I never missed a show,” she added.
Oprah Winfrey credits her father for her success.
On Father’s Day, Oprah posted another Father’s Day homage to Vernon on her blog, Oprah Daily, recalling how he looked after her while growing up in Nashville.

Oprah said that her father was “tight, disciplined, and always worried that I was going to wander from the road of holiness he was trying to lay before me.”
So today, I honor my father, Vernon Winfrey, and all the fathers who have provided you, me, and us with the finest direction and support they could at the moment.
In addition, I have personal experience with how a good father’s positive impact may alter a person’s course in life.

Similarly, Oprah spent her early years in Milwaukee with her mother, Vernita Lee, who passed away in 2018, and in Kosciusko, Mississippi, her late father’s hometown. But between the ages of 7 and 9 and during her teenage years, she also resided in Nashville with her father.
Oprah said to the Washington Post in 1986 that she would have taken a different path if she hadn’t been transferred to live with her father when she was 14.
I could have been a successful crook. But instead, these same impulses would have been applied differently.
